Training Diary // Cambridge Half Marathon // Week 8

I had a lousy week of training but it ended on a high. I've been seriously unmotivated to run the last two weeks. Im not entirely sure why, I just kept putting off runs until it was too late to do them.

I had a good/bad swim lesson on Monday - We had a different swim coach, I regular was off sick. The lesson started OK, we did backstroke drills, front crawl drills and a bit of butterfly. However, for the last half of the lesson, we were to do tumble turns.. If you've read my blog for a while or you follow me on IG.. you'll know that I hate tumble turns, I cannot do them without getting a nose full of water(which absolutely wrecks!)

When we've done it in the past, we practise in the middle of the pool.. but we were being asked to swim towards the wall and tumble.. something I'm absolutely not comfortable with since I can't do it stationary.. so I ended up just watching others do it. I ended up only swimming about 12 minutes of a 30 minute lesson.
A double workout day. I have been meaning to go swimming more often. I need to swim at least twice a week to make it worth the monthly direct debit. So I took myself off for a swim in the morning before work. I swam 1225m breast stroke.

In the evening, I went for a run straight after work whilst it was still fairly light out. I did 3 miles in 29:17 putting me at a 9:44 min/mi pace which is about 40 seconds quicker per mile than I typically run.

This run made me quite optimistic that I'd have a good race on Sunday..

I'm not gonna go into much detail about race day as It'll be in race recap that I'll hopefully have go live tomorrow!
but I got a PB! and I'm pretty ecstatic about it! :D

So, it wasn't the best of weeks for training but it ended on a massive high. I've been doubting my ability to get the sub 1hr I wanted for ages and I finally managed it!

I'm feeling quite motivated this week, I have swimming this evening and Im planning on running tomorrow morning. I'm hoping to start getting some speed runs in, in the run up to the half marathon, which is still coming round very quickly.

There's only 4 weeks left until Cambridge Half, so I've only a couple of speed sessions and my last couple of long runs to fit in over the next couple of weeks.

Im linking up with Courtney from Eat Pray Run DC again to share training diaries with other runners! So check out the linkup on her blog! :) Also, if you want to catch up on my other training diaries, you can find them all HERE.

Question: What do you do when you're struggling for motivation to run? Do you know how to tumble turn in swimming?

Congrats on the PR!!! I'll be looking forward to the recap!!!
When I get unmotivated I usually get dressed anyways, wait until the last minute and tell myself"I'll only run for 10 minutes, if I still don't feel the running mojo I'll stop". A majority of the time once I get started I am able to get the workout/run done. I also usually keep going bc I would feel guilty if I stopped 10 minutes in. Unless I'm injured or sick that's the trick I use to get going!!
OH and in regards to the flip turn. You have to remember to blow out all your air during the turn so water doesn't go up. If you hold your breath water can easily flow up your nose. If your physically pushing air out of your mouth and nose, no water can get in.... I had to learn that the hard way ( I swam competitively for 8 years)
Anyways, hope this upcoming week is treating you well so far!looling forward to your race recap!

  4. @Courtney Thanks! It was totally unexpected! I suprised myself on race day! :)

  5. @Kathryn Thayer Thank you! :D Im still buzzing from it! :)

  6. @MELISSA CUNNINGHAM Thank you! :D Sounds like a good idea to get dressed! I almost always find that the run is absolutely fine as soon as im out and I've never regret a run.. Im just like my sleep and it takes me ages to get in the mood to want to go out!

Thanks for the advice on TTs! I've always blown out through my nose but seem to panic and stop breathing out before I've finished the turn so i've always got water up my nose!
